WHAT EXACTLY IS A DENTAL IMPLANT?

To explain what a dental implant is, we must first point out that it is a very simple and safe technique. It consists of a biocompatible titanium device that is inserted through the gum and into the bone, to replace the dental root. A fixed dental prosthesis is placed on this artificial root, usually a cemented or screw – retained crown. The loss of one or several teeth supposes an imbalance of the entire structure of the mouth, which we can easily solve with the new dental implant techniques. This procedure does not affect the adjacent teeth and ensures the stability of the entire mouth, avoiding malformations, bone loss, gum loss and malocclusions (bite problems)

PROCEDURE FOR THE PLACEMENT OF DENTAL IMPLANTS

The dental implant placement process is done in several steps. First, a complete study of the condition of the bone ( where the implant will be placed) is carried out using X – rays, dental CT, photos and digital scanning. Once the study is done, the intervention is scheduled.

In this intervention , under local anesthesia, an incision is made in the gum and the implant is placed inside the bone . To ensure proper bone – implant integration , it is necessary to wait several months before placing the final crown. After this healing phase, known as ” osseointegration “, and through a titanium abutment , the final crown is attached to the implant.

To avoid possible discomfort during the integration phase, at Bruno Negri Integral Dental Clinic we place temporary fixed teeth during the first stage ( while we wait for the final tooth ), especially in the aesthetic area (visible area of the smile ).

HOW MUCH DOES A DENTAL IMPLANT COST?

Dental implants are made of titanium , a biocompatible material that can rarely present integration problems . These problems are generally associated with smokers , poor hygiene , or uncontrolled diabetes, not with the implant itself . The percentage of non – integration of dental implants is around 2% of the total.

RECOVERY TIME AFTER PLACING A DENTAL IMPLANT

The placement of dental implants has a short recovery time, around 2 – 3 days after the intervention. The postoperative period of a dental implant does not usually cause discomfort, beyond mild to moderate pain and perhaps some small discomfort at night. After the intervention, the patient will have to go back for a check – up to remove the sutures, between 7 to 15 days after, always following the instructions of our specialists, since each patient has a different healing time.

Implants can be for life if we take care of them , if we do not have harmful habits ( tobacco , alcohol, poor hygiene ) and if we carry out regular dental check – ups, at least twice a year . If there is poor dental hygiene , bacteria can accumulate on the implant surface leading to infections and bone loss in the area where the implant is placed, resulting in Peri – implantitis.
